Executive Director
Kenny Purser joins JLAC from Expeditionary Learning Schools Outward Bound, where he was a Regional Director.  Prior to this, Kenny was founding Principal of Metropolitan Arts and Tech High School in San Fransicso.  He also served as the Dean of Students at Berkeley High School and as the After-School Coordinator at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School in Berkeley.  Earlier in his career he was a science and math teacher and an Outward Bound Instructor.  Kenny has a Master of Arts in School Administration from The University of California, Berkeley; a Master of Arts in Science Education from New York University; and a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences from Auburn University.  He has held credentials in Biology and Chemistry in California and New York and in School Administration in California.  He also has been trained in facilitative leadership by Interaction Associates in Cambridge, Massachusetts.  Purser lives in Oakland with his wife and two children.

Rowing Director and Head Coach
Matt Pearce comes to Jack London Aquatic Center from Durham University, England where he coached in the Men's High Performance program for Great Britain rowing. He has been involved in rowing for 17 years, 11 as a coach. As a coach Matt is a strong believer that by challenging the athlete to be the best rower they can be, you empower them to excel on and off the water. Over his years of coaching Matt has coached crews to win 5 national titles in 4 different countries.


 

 
Sea Kayak Coordinator/Instructor
Mark Burk, a longtime kayak instructor at JLAC, has taken over the program full-time. The kayak program is expanding, more students are coming to JLAC for physical education, recreation and water safety. The adult program is offering a three-month Partner program for beginning sea kayakers to get some time in a kayak. JLAC will also offer kayak workshops each quarter to enhance those skills.
Mark is an American Canoe Association Instructor Trainer. If you want to enhance your paddling skills, contact Mark for some personalized instruction.

Assistant Rowing Coach
Melissa Chun was a coxswain for the University of California, Berkeley and Peninsula Junior Rowing Club in Redwood CityWhat Melissa most enjoys about JLAC are her supportive coworkers, the athletes, and the center’s commitment to the East Bay community.


Community Room Scheduler
Dorothy L. Fields, a Bekeley native and longtime Oakland resident, is originally a stop loss auditor and has a background in working with non-profit youth groups. Ms. Fields has an innate flare for party planning and presentation and looks forward to working with you to make your next big event here at JLAC a resounding success.

Facility Maintenance
Frank Cabrales has spent most of his life in Oakland. He attended Oakland Technical High school and worked in shipping & receiving before starting his own janitorial business. Mr. Cabrales enjoys working for JLAC - there are always new and different challenges.
