Says Junior Rowing Program alumna (now attending college) Maya Star:

"Rowing has helped me maintain my focus when I'm stressed and exhausted. It has also helped me with my listening and coordinating skills. Crew has inspired me to work through the struggle and to never quit. It has taught me how to physically work harder than I ever have, emotionally express myself and push myself, and to mentally strive for my best. Crew has helped me to make choices that challenge myself and to work at my best effort. Rowing has also demanded tremendous commitment and time which has made me more aware of how to manage my time and organize myself around my goals."

The JLAC Junior Rowing Program
(after school, during the school year)

A typical practice week for the fall season-

Mon and Wed - rowing and conditioning

Spring Season - Jan. through May 2009

A typical practice week for the spring season-

Mon - Fri - Rowing, travel, and race preparation

Since 2004 JLAC has been making the sport of rowing (also called "Crew") accessible to high school students from all of Oakland's neighborhoods. Mondays through Fridays, from 4:00-6:30 p.m., September through May, we teach youth ages 14-18 how to row. Rowers from this past season attended Skyline, McClymonds, Oakland Tech, Oakland Charter Academy, and Head Royce.

This could be your sport! For a lot of young people, discovering rowing means finally finding the sport that is the perfect combination of fitness and fun. Rowing builds strength, rewards teamwork and can open doors to college schoarship opportunities.

That sounds really cool! I think I'd like to join, but

I can't swim. I'm afraid of the water.
We spend the entire fall session teaching our novices how to swim, and empower them with water safety skills.

I've never played on a team before.
You're not alone. Many of our participants had never tried a sport before they went out for crew. And now they have found that not only are they making new friends and having a blast, but they have become stronger and more disciplined, have lost weight and are doing better in school.

How will I get to the Center in time for practice? It's so far from my home & school and I have no car.
We have two vans and drivers that will pick you up from school and take you to the center. We will arrange a carpool for you on the ride home.

I heard that rowing is an expensive sport. I am not sure how I'll be able to pay.
We are committed to keeping the cost of Crew as low as possible. If you can't pay our fees, we have work-study scholarships you can apply for.

I'd like to learn more.

Scholarships: Please do not let money stop you from joining our programs. JLAC's goal is to include all youth who have a genuine interest in water sports. Partial scholarships, payment arrangements, and work exchange are available. Please contact DeDe Birch at 510.208.6060 or email director@jlac.org.
